Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatments

When you woke up today, how did you feel? Are you commonly well rested, or are you often excessively sleepy during the day? Difficulty staying asleep, attention problems, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, and morning headaches are all symptoms of sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a potentially debilitating condition characterized by shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. Though this is a medical condition that can cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and impaired concentration, it can also be treated by one of our qualified dental professionals.

Those affected by sleep apnea often snore, choke, or gasp during their sleep but have no recollection of it upon waking. In fact, more than 90% of those who have it don’t realize it. At Family Tree Dental, as part of our commitment to your total health, we offer a personalized approach to treating sleep apnea that differs from intrusive medical alternatives such as the CPAP device (continuous positive airway pressure) and surgery.

Often, minor snoring problems that lead to sleep apnea can be treated using a removable dental appliance (called a mouthpiece or oral appliance) that is worn at night to stabilize the tongue and reposition the jaw. Soon after using a mouthpiece, most of our patients experienced immediate relief from sleep apnea symptoms and side effects and began feeling well rested.

If sleep apnea medical alternatives aren’t appealing or haven’t worked in the past for you, please Contact Family Tree Dental and ask how our treatments can help alleviate your condition.

Snore Guards

Did you know that it is estimated that more than 90 million Americans snore?  Snoring does not just affect your sleep cycle – it can cause obstructive sleep apnea if not addressed, among other issues.  Snoring happens when air struggles to flow through your mouth and nose, which causes soft tissue in your airways to vibrate.  The vibration of the soft tissue is what causes that snoring sound.  Luckily, you can find relief from snoring with a snore guard.  Here at Family Tree Dental in Marietta, Ohio, we can assist in getting you fitted for one.

A snore guard is fitted to the upper dental arch, which stops your snoring by helping your airways to remain open while you sleep. The snore guard will move your jaw slightly forward, which is how we obtain that unobstructed airway.

When the airway stays open, the soft tissue is less likely to experience those vibrations, thus stopping your snoring.  While CPAP machines will leave you prone to cavities, a snore guard will not.  Not to mention, this is a much more comfortable alternative to a CPAP machine!  Keep in mind, a snore guard is used for more mild cases of sleep apnea.

If you are looking for relief from snoring, consider reaching out to us here at Family Tree Dental.  We are happy to get you fitted for a snore guard and help you (and your family) get a more restful sleep.
