Are You Sedated for a Root Canal?

Dental Teeth Cleaning

Most instances of having a root canal do not require the patient to be sedated. The dentist providing the root canal will most likely apply local anesthesia to the area where the infected tooth is and get to work.

In few cases, however, multiple teeth can be severely infected and the patient may need to be sedated in order for the dentist to be able to work. If you are sedated for a root canal, it will most likely be with IV sedation which will help you to remain calm and relaxed throughout the procedure.

Can You Choose to be Sedated for a Root Canal?

Some patients are fearful of being in pain from a root canal. Due to the fact that the dentist wants every patient to be as comfortable as possible, they may allow you to be sedated for a root canal procedure.

It is important to note that you will still feel some pressure during the procedure, but the sedation will help you to remain calm. If you have a fear of needles, you may want to ask if you can be sedated with laughing gas instead.

Sedation for a root canal is not required and is solely up to the patient’s preference. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to ask your dentist prior to the procedure.

How Painful is a Root Canal Procedure?

You will feel no pain during a root canal procedure due to the anesthetic that is used by the dentist to numb the patients gums. Once the anesthetic has been applied and takes effect, you will not feel any pain.

Patients may experience some soreness or tenderness around the gums after the procedure, but this is typically short lived and can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication.

How Long Does A Root Canal Take?

A root canal procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes to complete. The time it takes will depend on how many teeth need to be treated and the severity of the infection.

If you have any questions or concerns about a root canal procedure, be sure to ask your dentist prior to the procedure.
